The estrogenic mycotoxin zearalenone (ZON) produced by some Fusarium spp. causes reproductive problems and hyperestrogenic syndromes in mammals. In an effort to elucidate the molecular pathways of ZON production, we present a comparative real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction expression study of seven contiguous genes in the ZON biosynthetic cluster on sterile rice and during wheat and oat infection. Under ZON production on rice, the polyketide synthase (PKS) genes PKS4 and PKS13, alcohol oxidase FG12056 gene, and transcriptional regulator FG02398 gene showed similarly upregulated patterns, whereas the nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NPS) FG02394, the K+ channel beta subunit FG12015, and the protein kinase FG02399 displayed a variant pattern. During the same time period under wheat infection when no ZON was produced, the PKS genes and the NPS were downregulated relative to rice whereas the K+ channel beta subunit gene FG12015 was markedly upregulated, suggesting that it may play a role in the infection process. This is the first expression study of ZON biosynthetic genes in planta. The results give insight into the regulation and activities of the ZON gene cluster under different experimental systems and suggest a connection between ZON and a K+ channel that could reveal a novel function for ZON in Fusarium spp.

Tie long-term use of a filter-based, on-site wastewater treatment system increases nutrient discharge to receiving waters and may reduce its hygienic barrier efficiency. The main purpose of this research was to assess the hygienic barrier efficiency and the associated health risks of an on-site system that had exceeded its 5-yr design capacity with respect to phosphorus (P) removal. The system was investigated for bacteria and virus removal and assessed with respect to potential health risks in relation to reuse of effluent for irrigation. The system consists of a septic tank, a pressure-dosed vertical flow biofilter, and an up-flow filter unit with lightweight clay aggregates. The total P concentration in the effluent had increased gradually from initially <0.1 mg P L-1 during the first 2 yr of operation to 1.8 mg P L-1 after 5.3 yr. Escherichia coli was used as an indicator organism for fecal bacteria removal, whereas bacteriophages phi X174 and Salmonella typhimurium phage 28B (S.t. 28B) were used to model enteric virus removal. An overall decrease in E. coli removal occurred from a complete (approximately 5.6 log(10)) reduction during the first 3 yr of operation to 2.6 log(10) reduction. The removal amounts of the bacteriophages phi X174 and S.t. 28B were 3.9 and 3.7 log(10), respectively. Based on removal of S.t. 28B, the risks of rotavirus infection and disease for the investigated scenarios were above the acceptable level of 10(-4) and 10(-3), respectively, as defined by the World Health Organization.

In modern agricultural landscapes, large herbivores are often restricted in their mobility or are found at low densities, and other animal vectors may therefore be important for seed dispersal. In our study, a range of plant species were able to disperse by attaching seeds to, and having their seeds retained in, the fox fur some distance. We suggest that the red fox may be an important vector for epizoochorous seed dispersal in the agricultural landscape.

The aim of this experiment was to investigate effects of temperature and photoperiod on growth characteristics, chemical composition and indigestible fibre (IaNDF) in timothy harvested at three defined maturity stages. Two cultivars of timothy, Engmo (69 degrees N) and Grindstad (59 degrees N) were grown in a controlled environment using a phytotron, and were exposed to two different temperature regimes (21/15 degrees C and 15/9 degrees C, 12h/12h)and photoperiods (18 and 24h). Plants were harvested at beginning of heading (BH), full heading (FH) and anthesis (AN). Leaves and stems were separated prior to chemical analyses and ruminal in situ incubation for 288 h was used to determine indigestible aNDF (IaNDF) content. Plants grown at low temperature used almost twice the number of days to reach AN, compared to the highest temperature regime. This explained the lower leaf:stem ratio (LSR), higher aNDF content and lower crude protein (CP) content in low temperature plants. The effect of temperature was often dependent on maturity stage. However, the content of IaNDF and lignin(sa) was only affected by maturity stage at harvest. The content of IaNDF and lignin increased by 70% and 35% respectively from BH to AN. The lack of response in IaNDF and lignin(sa) content and dry matter digestibility to temperature was probably caused by a combination of direct and indirect temperature effects. Photoperiod affected growth characteristics, but had minor effects on chemical composition and IaNDF. Due to the lower LSR, Engmo had higher IaNDF and lignin(sa) content than Grindstad. This study showed a high positive correlation (0.93) between IaNDF and lignin(sa). Interactions between temperature and maturity stage affect the growth and nutritive characteristics of timothy. Plant litter is an important determinant of seed germination and seedling establishment. Positive effects of litter have received considerable attention, but few studies have explicitly tested whether seedlings are more facilitated by conspecific litter compared to heterospecific litter. In order to contrast conspecific and heterospecific facilitative effects on seedling establishment, we used Anthriscus sylvestris, Angelica sylvestris, Pimpinella saxifraga and different combinations of their seeds and litter seedbeds as a model system. Although litter had a significant species-specific effect on seedling emergence, we found no evidence of strictly conspecific facilitation. Anthriscus sylvestris displayed a positive response to all types of litter. In contrast, there was a clear negative effect of conspecific litter in Pimpinella saxifraga. Activated carbon did not modify the negative effect, indicating that chemical compounds were not the cause. Our study suggests a high level of idiosyncrasy in response to litter at the species level.

The objectives of this study were (1) to develop models for estimation of total above-ground biomass, tree crown biomass and stem biomass of mountain birch (Betula pubescens spp. czerepanovii), and (2) to test the stability of the relationships between biomass and biophysical tree properties across geographical regions and tree size ranges. The models were developed using a mixed modelling approach accounting for the hierarchical structure of the data that originated from sample plots. Diameter at breast height, tree height, and the ratio between height and diameter were candidate explanatory variables, but only diameter was statistically significant (p0.05). The model fit values (pseudo-R 2) were 0.91, 0.60 and 0.85 for the three respective models. A substantial part of the model random errors could be attributed to between-plot variations. The conclusion related to objective (1) was that the models are well suited for biomass prediction of mountain birch in the mountain areas of southern Norway. Furthermore, models reported in previous research that had been calibrated on data from other regions were applied on the current data set. The results indicate that models calibrated for small trees produced predictions diverging from the observed values of the current data set. The differences between predicted and observed values also seem to vary along a site productivity gradient. Still, even though the differences between predicted and observed values using the different models varied quite a lot, the relationships were relatively stable within certain limits. The conclusion related to objective (2) was that biomass models can be applied outside the region for which they were developed, which in many cases is necessary because local models do not exist. However, the properties of the model development data related to tree size range and site productivity should be similar to those of the area for which predictions are being made.

Genetic parameters were estimated for wood density and spiral grain in two long-term field trials with families of Picea abies (L.) Karst., and for microfibril angle (MfA) and model-predicted wood stiffness (MOEest) at one of the sites. The trials were located at 600-720 m altitude in Norway and the progenies, which were a sample of 13 half-sib families from plus-trees in a breeding population, were 33 years old from seed when measured. Significant genetic variation (p0.05) was found for all wood quality traits. The narrow-sense heritability was estimated to be 0.50 for density (across two sites), 0.38 for MfA, 0.29 for MOEest and 0.37 for spiral grain (across two sites). No significant genotype by environment interactions were found for density or spiral grain (p0.05). Genetic relationships between ring width and wood quality traits were negative for density and MOEest, and positive for MfA. Site index and competition had major effects on wood density and predicted MOEest but not on MfA and spiral grain.

Techniques for the production of raspberry long canes with high yield potential were studied on a research station and in two commercial nurseries in South Norway. Potted 'Glen Ample' plants were grown in the open and in polyethylene greenhouses during two seasons in order to optimize Cultural practices. Dates of propagation and transfer to the production sites were varied. Following cold storage from December to early June, the canes were tipped (cut) at 160 cm height and grown in open plastic tunnels in the fruiting season for the evaluation of growth and yield performance. Remarkable berry yields of 1.5-3.8 kg per plant (cane) were regularly achieved. When grown in the open, later starts than June 1 (June 15 and July 1) successively reduced yields. On the other hand, an earlier start involves risks of growth cessation due to low spring temperature. When grown in greenhouses, high yields were still possible when plants were transferred from propagation conditions as late as July 1, although optimal yields of nearly 4 kg per plant were obtained with transfer on June 15. In a year with unusually high summer temperatures, the yields of canes produced in the open and in greenhouses did not vary significantly, whereas in the second year with normal summer temperatures, canes produced in greenhouses consistently out-yielded those produced in the open by about I kg per cane. Regression analyses revealed that high yields were associated with fruiting cane architecture traits such as cane height, number and length of laterals, and a low proportion of dormant buds. The single most important component was lateral length which alone accounted for 82% of the yield variation. Since lateral lengths increased from the shoot tip towards the base, cane heights in excess of 2 m are required for the attainment of top yields as the uppermost nodes with short and low-yielding laterals then can be eliminated by tipping.
