One approach to sea lice treatment is to stock fish such as ballan wrasse into sea cages. However, the wild capture of large numbers of wrasse has come under scrutiny by environmentalists, while salmon farmers prefer reared disease-free wrasse to wild ones. The domestic production and use of ballan wrasse may therefore be a sustainable and innovative alternative to wild capture. This concept is the main focus of EcoFish – a 3-year transnational project financed by the European Regional Development Fund, the Northern Periphery Programme, and both private and governmental grants. The partners involved include the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture at the University of Nordland, Bioforsk Nord, Ardtoe Marine Laboratory, the Carna Research Station, and the Indigo Rock Marine Research Centre. Associate partners are the Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organisation (SSPO), The Scottish Salmon Company Ltd, Bord Iascaigh Mhara, Daithi O’Muruchu Marine Research, Fjord Industrial Research Station Ltd, Kvarøy Fish Farm Ltd, and the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute. Several technical and biological obstacles must be overcome before wrasse hatchery techniques are fully developed and farmed juveniles can be stocked into salmon cages. Broodstock management, egg production and larval rearing are currently being examined. This paper presents the techniques delopped during the project for the maintenance of productive ballan wrasse broodstocks, capable of providing year-round supplies of eggs, and to use these eggs to develop commercially applicable methods for the continuous production of post-larvae for ongrowing. There is also a focus on the rearing of wrasse from weaning to sizes suitable for transfer to sea cages, so they are developing procedures for rearing wrasse in the hatchery to ensure maximum survival and rapid growth to enable wrasse to be stocked after a short ongrowing period. Lastly the field application and testing of ballan wrasse for lice control in salmon is being tested, and this includes trials to assess their effectiveness under working conditions in aquaculture environments.

In ecosystem research, data-driven approaches to modeling are of major importance. Models are more often than not shaped by the spatiotemporal structure of the observations: an inverse modeling approach prevails. Here, I investigate the insights obtained from Recurrence Quantification Analysis of observed ecosystem time series. As a typical example of available long-term monitoring data, I choose time series from hydrology and hydrochemistry. Besides providing insights into the nonstationary and nonlinear dynamics of these variables, RQA also enables a detailed and temporally local model-data comparison.

The need for effecient use of phosphorus in food production has been repeatedly emphasized. The argumentation is often connected to eutrophication problems caused by long term soil P accumulation.
