In ecosystem research, data-driven approaches to modeling are of major importance. Models are more often than not shaped by the spatiotemporal structure of the observations: an inverse modeling approach prevails. Here, I investigate the insights obtained from Recurrence Quantification Analysis of observed ecosystem time series. As a typical example of available long-term monitoring data, I choose time series from hydrology and hydrochemistry. Besides providing insights into the nonstationary and nonlinear dynamics of these variables, RQA also enables a detailed and temporally local model-data comparison.

The need for effecient use of phosphorus in food production has been repeatedly emphasized. The argumentation is often connected to eutrophication problems caused by long term soil P accumulation.

Forest regrowth in rural districts of Norway is currently leading to extensive landscape changes. We aim to quantify and understand the future impact of outfield forest regrowth following land-use abandonment on red-listed vascular plant species which are supposedly threatened by regrowth in Norway, i.e. species classified to habitats within the semi-natural landscape. Vascular plant species were defined by the Norwegian Red List and presence data was downloaded from the Norwegian GBIF-node, Artskart. A newly developed spatially explicit model of deforested semi-natural heaths and meadows in Norway was used to evaluate the vulnerability of red-listed plants to future forest regrowth. The results show that some red-listed species may be greatly affected, since they have most of their known populations within the modelled areas of future forest regrowth. The study also revealed that there are many methodological challenges in using museum databases for hypothesis testing. However, the use of such databases was clearly hypothesis generating, giving us many ideas for future studies.

Sixteen gardens in South-Eastern Norway were divided into four groups of four gardens. In treatment 1 (untreated control) nothing was done to reduce slug numbers. In treatment 2 ("killing") the owners were encouraged to collect and kill as many slugs as possible. In treatment 3 (habitat manipulation) owners were encouraged to change their garden so that an area of about 20 cm close to the ground was kept as open and dry as possible. Treatment 4 (extended habitat manipulation) included treatment 3 but also by removing of potential overwintering sites such as open compost, heap of stones etc. A reduction in the number of slugs was observed in all the years and in all treatments from June to September, probably due to natural mortality. The mean number of slugs was always lowest in treatment 2, in the third year showing a significant reduction of more than 80% from the control. In treatment 4 the mean reduction of slugs (not significant) was almost 40% during the third year. In treatment 3 the mean reduction (not significant) was about 55% during the third year. In conclusion, creating a garden not favorable to the Iberian slug can reduced the population without using molluscicides.
