Sammendrag

Low soil temperatures limit nutrient uptake with negative consequences for growth and foliage quality. A better understanding of the temperature sensitivity of root N uptake is required to improve the best management practices for fertilization of conifers. Uptake of 15N in saplings of Abies lasiocarpa (Hook) Nutt and Abies nordmanniana (Steven) Spach was studied at root temperatures of 3 - 15°C in hydroponics. 15N accumulation in shoots increased with temperature, showing accelerated accumulation from 7°C upward. At 3°C, uptake rates were low for both species. Between 7 and 12°C, 15N accumulation in shoots increased by a factor of 5 in A. lasiocarpa and by a factor of 3 in A. nordmanniana. The temperature response of N uptake was similar to root growth responses to temperature documented by previous studies. The results have implications for early season fertilization, where fertilization of both species should be withheld until soil temperatures reach 10 -12°C.

Sammendrag

The main goal of this study was to develop an alternative bedding material for cattle and sheep based on locally produced woodchips from birch trees and Sphagnum peat in Northern Norway. Four litter mixtures; 2.5 and 5.0 cm woodchips, with and without 20 % peat of total volume were studied in A) Four pens sized 20.4 m2 with two cattle each, ie one pen per treatment; B) Eight pens sized 21.2 m2 with seven ewes each, ie two pens per treatment, and two similar sheep pens with deep straw (barley) as controls. The number of lying animals was counted in 10 minutes’ intervals from 6 pm to 6 am for two consecutive days and the mean number of animals lying simultaneously per pen and hour, was calculated. The cleanliness of the animals was assessed within three separate body sections (legs, side, rear) using a scale from 0-2 points for each body part (0 p=clean, 6 p=dirty). The proportion of animals lying simultaneously per pen and hour and individual cleanliness scores were analysed by GLM. No differences in lying behaviour and cleanliness between the four woodchips mixtures were found, neither for sheep nor cattle. However, straw bedding resulted in the least dirty ewes (P

To flisstørrelser (2,5 og 5 cm) med og uten innblanding av torv (20 % av flisvolum, fig. 2, 3) ble prøvd som tallemateriale for sau og kjøttfé vinteren 2008/2009. resulterte halmtallen i reinere søyer og mer hvile fordi halmen hadde bedre oppsugingsevne enn den grove flisa. Flisstørrelse og innblanding av torv hadde liten betydning for reinhetsgrad og liggeatferd hos kjøttfé og sau.  

Sammendrag

During the last decade the cattle population has declined by 17 percent in the Agder and Western Norway counties. The use of pasture has decreased and intensive beef production in the area is depending upon consentrate feeding. The study evaluates replacing 10 percent of the indoor fed bulls with castrates grazing two seasons, in order to increase output of biomass and reducing encroachment.
