Consumer resistance against GM crops is still substantial in the United States and Europe. We conducted an internet survey in the United States and Norway with more than 1,000 respondents in each country to estimate consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for GM soybean oil, farmed salmon fed with GM soy, and GM salmon. The differences in WTP for the conventional as compared with the GM alternatives are relatively small. Only between 7 and 13% of the respondents indicated that they were willing to pay more than a 20% premium for each of the conventional alternatives as compared to the corresponding GM alternatives. The average WTP premiums range from 7.5 to 9.2%. This suggests a large similarity in WTP in Norway and the United States and across the three products.

In nature plant terpenoids play multiple ecological roles. Many phytophagous insects use them as kairomones to locate their host plants. This is also the case for Lobesia botrana, which is the main pest of European vineyards. It was found that a specific blend of the terpenoids (E)-β-caryophyllene, (E)-β-farnesene and the homoterpene (E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene emitted by grapevine was attractive to L. botrana females, and the attractiveness was shown to be dependent on the kairomone ratio. In this work, we generated stable grapevine transgenic lines with altered (E)-β-caryophyllene and (E)-β-farnesene emission compared to natural plants. Thus, we modified the ratio between these two kairomones in vivo, and tested how it affected L. botrana behaviour.

Plant defence against environmental stressors often changes dramatically as plant develop. The composition of secondary compounds (PSM) in the vegetation of a landscape has extensive influence on ecosystem functioning. It is therefore crucial that we understand how various temporal factors affect plant content of PSMs, particularly those indirectly induced and controlled by human activity. One illustrative PSM group of major ecological interest is phenolics, which serve needs as diverse as herbivory defence, pathogen resistance, allelopathy or symbioses signalling, frost and drought hardiness, and photodamage protection. I will present results from our ongoing studies of defensive chemistry of European beech (Fagus sylvatica) and birch (Betula spp) across seasons and ages, and discuss the results in relation to ecological theories and functionality of plant chemical defence.

Kompetansekravet for å svare på markedets forventninger knyttet til matproduksjon, foredling, tilberedning og servering, er sammensatt og sterkt tverrfaglig. Dette henger sammen med at forbrukerendringer de siste par tiår har gått i retning av mer fokus på matens opprinnelse, både mht. miljø-, dyrevelferd og helseaspektet. En naturlig konsekvens er at behovet for å koble sammen næringer langs hele verdikjeden øker. Samtidig meldes det om rekrutteringsutfordringer til matbransjen, og tilgangen på fagutdannede er lav. Sett i lys av fagskolereformen, der målet er å utdanne flere fagfolk for framtiden gjennom økt kvalitet og status på fagskoleutdanningen, er det derfor viktig å arbeide for å etablere utdanningstilbud som møter denne etterspørselen....

Sammendrag

De norske askeskogene er en nordlig utløper av større askeskoger i Europa som spredte seg nordover etter siste istid. Vi har undersøkt genetisk variasjon i ask (Fraxinus excelsior) og funnet at asken i Norge fulgte en østlig innvandringsvei fra overvintringsområder i SørøstEuropa. Mens den genetiske variasjonen i stor grad ble opprettholdt gjennom Europa, gikk svært mye av den genetiske variasjonen tapt nordover langs kysten av Norge, hvor vi også finner de største genetiske forskjellene mellom askepopulasjonene. Kunnskap om askens genetiske variasjon er verdifull for forvaltningen med tanke på framtidig restaurering og bevaring av genetiske ressurser nå som asken er truet av askeskuddsjuke.

Forest covers 37% of Norway’s combined area, almost half of which is made up by the tree species called Norway spruce. The rest consists of mostly pine and birch. It is therefore only natural that spruce forests should feature so heavily on black metal album covers and lyrics. The extreme music genre of black metal, as we think of it today, was birthed in Norway. Although it could be said that its place of origin was accidental, the subsequent use and appropriation of that place’s topographic features was not. Since its inception in the early nineties, the genre has spawned countless bands across the globe, many who take on its misanthropic ethos, but also a deep reverence and respect for nature. Within black metal’s aesthetic, photographs of ominous black tree lines and lyrics about disappearing into the depths of the forest abound – it is almost as if the spruce tree has become its own character in the mythology that black metal has become.

Det er kjent at både utsatt såing og jordpakking i våronna reduserer kornavlinga. Tapet kalles gjerne for laglighetskostnad. Det er også kjent at en kan redusere denne kostnaden ved å øke kapasiteten per dag i våronn. Dette medfører enten økte maskinkostnader eller økte arbeidskostnader, eller begge deler. For den enkelte kornbonde gjelder det å finne en optimal balanse mellom disse kostnadene. I 2016 ble det utgitt en NIBIO-rapport som på basis av historiske værdata i Norge viste hvor mye kornavlinga ble redusert når en tok hensyn til jordpakking, utsatt såtid, jordart og våronnkapasitet per dag, og samspill mellom disse faktorene. Relativ avling i forhold til potensiell avling ble presentert i ligninger for klimasonene Østlandet sør, Østlandet nord og Midt-Norge. Disse ligningene er brukt i nåværende publikasjon.

The PETRO MAKS project "Formation and behaviour of thin oil films and evaluation of response methods including HSE", in the following short "Thin oil films" has the objective to achieve new knowledge more efficient and safe oil spill response operations for releases of condensates and light crude oils that may lead to thin oil films on the sea surface. Main objectives are: 1. lncreased understanding of the formation and behaviour of thin oil films . 2. Assessment of the potential human exposure to volatile compounds 3. Refined processes in oil trajectory models in order to give more reliable predictions of the life time and behaviour of thin oil films and to assess the efficacy of response options. This report addresses objective 3. and summarizes the results of three pre-studies on important processes for modelling of (thin) surface oil. We discuss model improvements and conclude with a proposal for concrete changes in the OSCAR model to better address behaviour and lifetime of thin films in the model.

There is consensus that land-use change is a main driver behind the recent declines of many pollinator populations in Europe. However, it is still not adequately understood how the local resource quality and landscape composition influence pollinators, and if and how the effects vary in space and time. We analysed the influence of landscape- (2 km radius) and local scale- (50 m transects) resources on bumblebee species richness and abundance during two years in South-eastern Norway, where agriculture is highly modernised but landscapes still show limited spatial homogenization. Local flower density and species richness were strongly positively associated with bumblebee densities and species richness, but higher landscape-level flower species richness were linked to lower local bumblebee abundances. Early and late mass flowering crops had clear, but contrasting, effects. The total area of early flowering crops had a consistent negative impact on bumblebee density and species richness throughout the season, while late flowering crops had a positive impact in the beginning of the season before their bloom, suggesting a carry-over effect from previous years. The negative effects of early flowering crops could be due to competition of bumblebees with honey-bees, which are widely used in these crops. Bumblebee density and species richness were clearly negatively correlated with the total area of forest and flower-poor land use areas, including grass fields and cereals. In contrast, bumblebees were positively associated with most linear elements in the landscape (especially pasture and cropland verges), except for roads, which negatively affected bumblebee densities, possibly due to increased mortality, since the quality of the flower resources did not differ from other linear elements. Our results show that the quality and the spatial and temporal distribution of flower resources within the landscape are important drivers for bumblebees, but can create counterintuitive distribution patterns depending on the temporal and spatial resolution of the survey. Increasing flower resources in linear elements and the amount of late mass-flowering crops may be viable management measures to improve conditions for bumblebees in moderately intensified landscapes.
