Four nitrogen (N) levels, spanning those found naturally, were established in Calluna vulgaris grown in containers in an oceanic climate for 4 years on the southwest coast of Norway. The effects of (N) are discussed in relation to the influence on physiological ageing of the plants, the change in nutrient balance of the plant tissue and the subsequent increase in susceptibility to biotic and abiotic stresses.

The cherry cultivars "Van", "Ulster" and "Burlat" grafted on the rootstocks seedling, `Colt" and `Gisela 5" were evaluated for important fruit quality parameters at Ullensvang Research Centre during the 1998 season. The largest fruit size was found on the cultivar/rootstock combinations `Van"/seedling, `Ulster/Colt" and `Burlat/Gisela 5". Other parameters like fruit firmness, stone weight, soluble solids, titratable acids and pH of the fruit juice were registered as well.

This report is written on request from the forest nursery consultant in the Norwegian Forest Society. The aim of this report is to point out important factors influencing growth cessation and development of frost hardiness in conifers. Picea abies is the main tree species in Norway and represents 85 % of the planted seedlings. This report is therefore concentrating on that species. Growth cessation in P. abies is mainly controlled by photoperiod and is a prerequisite for cold acclimation. Artificial short day treatment is a common routine to induce growth cessation in forest nurseries. Low temperatures delay this initial cold acclimation. Terminal buds may however be formed also under long day conditions as a response to low temperatures, water or nutrient stress. Under these conditions smaller buds may be produced and abnormal growth patterns may occur after dehardening. Bud break is advanced in P. abies seedlings exposed to short day treatment in autumn. Terminal bud formation after the first growing season on the forest sites is also reported to occur later in seedlings exposed to short day treatment in the nursery. Nevertheless, the winter storage benefits derived from the short day treatment outweigh probably the risk of frost damage associated with earlier bud break. Still there is a need for research to clarify the consequences of timing and duration of the short day treatment on seedlings growth and second year growth rhythm. Low temperature is the main stimulus that induces cold tolerance in roots. Test methods to estimate root freezing tolerance are described, but they must be further developed to assess root freezing damage in containerised seedlings in the nurseries.
