Sammendrag

In light of the problems with the major sources and availability of energy in Malawi, new initiatives are being developed aimed at improving the status quo. One of the initiatives is the production of biofuels from several potential crops which include Jatropha curcas, Moringa oleifera and Castor plant (Ricinus communis). Several local and international companies have embarked on contract farming projects with rural farmers to produce the biofuel crops in the country. However, the agronomic practices of these crops are not well documented in the current agricultural extension manual. As a result, farmers rely on traditional knowledge and basic advice from extension workers.  Due to this, there are fears that only poor quality and quantity of the biofuel crop yields will be available to meet the commercial demands for biofuel production. This manual is prepared to address the agronomic aspects of three of the high potential biofuel crops in Malawi covered in three chapters: Jatropha curcas, Moringa oleifera and Castor plant (Ricinus communis).
