Milk samples from sixteen Norwegian Red dairy cows grazing mixed swards of either grass-red clover (GR) or mixed swards of sown and unsown species of grass, clover and other herbs (GCH) were collected during four periods. Both pastures were organically managed. Pasture botanical composition had no effect on milk fat, protein or vitamin concentration and only minor effects on fatty acid composition. Milk from GR had higher concentrations of the phytoestrogens equol, genistein and biochanin A than milk from GCH. Concentrations of equol in milk from GR were higher than concentrations reported from experiments with red clover silage. The oxidative stability of the milk lipids was not affected by pasture type

The effects of different production systems on sensory profile and fatty acid composition were examined in a study performed in Northern Norway (65o50"N, 12o28"E) in 2008. One-hundred and fifty Norwegian White Sheep lambs grazed on the same semi-natural pasture with their dams for three months or more. The effect of pre-slaughter fattening on meat quality was compared using a control group of lambs slaughtered directly from the pasture. Four pre-slaughter treatments were established: weaning and indoor-feeding on concentrate and grass silage for either 24 or 44 days before slaughtering (Conc24, Conc44), weaning and grazing on ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) pasture for the same periods (Rye24, Rye44). Loin samples of M. Longissimus dorsi including the subcutaneous fat over the muscle from fifteen carcasses from each treatment were analysed for sensory attributes and fatty acid composition. A lower intensity of acid taste was observed in meat from lambs in treatment Conc44 compared with meat from lambs in the control treatment. A higher content of the fatty acids C16:0, C18:1n-9 and C18:2n-6 and the n-6/n-3 ratio was related to meat from lambs fed concentrate, while a higher of the fatty acids C18:0, C18:1t-11 and C18:3n-3 was found in meat from grazing lambs.

In experiments at the Western coast of Norway, a dry matter (DM) content regarded acceptable for baling was reached within 6-8 hours after mowing in wide-spread crops as opposed to within 24 hours for swathed crops. Samples containing Clostridiae and butyric acid were more frequent in silages wilted wide-spread for 24 hours and then windrowed than in silages wilted in swaths equally long. This difference in hygienic quality might have been caused by differences in DM content and fermentation in the two types of silages as well as by contamination of soil borne organisms through additional handling and wheeling of wide-spread crops. Rapidly wilted crops and silages had a higher concentration of water soluble carbohydrates (WSC).

The paper presents the results of an analysis on recorded discharges in eight catchments located in Norway, Estonia and Latvia. Different parameters were calculated with the objective to describe the so-called intensity or "flashiness" in hydrology for the respective catchments. The calculations were performed on both hourly and average daily discharge values, in many cases leading to significant differences in the results. The obtained results suggest considering the inclusion of hourly discharges for both design purposes and the interpretation of nutrient and soil loss processes, especially in agricultural catchments having large diurnal variations in discharge. In the light of expected climate changes, the hydrological characterisation based on hourly discharge values provides improved information about the diurnal variations and extremes in catchment runoff

An analysis of discharge from agricultural catchments in Norway, Estonia and Latvia showed that information on extreme events can be lost when considering average daily discharge values. This might have serious implications for design purposes as well as for analysing nutrient - and soil loss processes. Inclusion of higher time resolution is proposed
