Influence of weather conditions on sporangia production, release and infection of P. infestans was investigated in Denmark, Norway and Finland using Burkard spore traps and trap plants exposed in field plots. Results from field trials show that P. infestans normally forms its sporangia during humid periods at night and that they are released by a drop in the humidity in the morning. The infection can occur in the morning if there are dew drops remaining on the canopy while sporangia are being released. Sporangia released into the air can only infect if they make contact with free water from either dew or precipitation within very few hours. The studies also showed that the newly formed sporangia can remain in the lesions during overcast weather conditions and be dispersed over at least 2-3 days. By coupling the sporangia formation with a model of sporangia survival as affected by global radiation, a better correlation was achieved between infection on trap plants and dispersed sporangia than if only the index of sporangia formation was used as a predictor. The involvement of the survival model will reduce the number of false warnings, and thus reduce fungicide consumption.

Le Roux et al. consider the approach that led to the above article as trend-setting. However, according to Le Roux et al. the data are unfortunately ‘‘inappropriately interpreted”. It is appreciated that le Roux et al. took the effort to study the original data and attempted a re-interpretation along the lines of an impressive list of publications which they claim have been ignored by Reimann et al. (2008). Here the achievements and shortcomings of their alternative interpretation will be discussed in view of the facts substantiating the conclusions of the original article......

The recent article entitled ‘‘The biosphere: A homogenizer of Pb-isotope signals` has attracted considerable interest from other researchers in this area. According to the critical comments by Bindler and Shotyk, the authors have supposedly neglected a substantial body of the literature and especially the reported temporal changes in Pb-isotope ratios in a variety of sample materials. They conclude that the urban transect is not appropriate for defining natural variation, and state that a substantial body of research indicates a limited uptake of Pb in plants.......

Use of mineral NPK fertilizer and animal manure has been compared since 1922 in two trials on morainic loam soil at a former research station, Møystad, near Hamar, southeast Norway. Yield results for the period 1983-2003 were reported recently (Riley 2007). During this time cattle manure at rates of 20, 40 and 60 Mg ha-1 yr-1 gave 81%, 87% and 90%, respectively, of the yields obtained using 100 kg N ha-1 yr-1 and adequate P and K supply, in mineral fertilizer. Approximate balance between the supply and takeoff of N, P and K was achieved at the lowest manure rate, but higher manure rates resulted in large surpluses of all three nutrients. In order to study possible residual effects, no manure has been applied from 2004 to 2007, and mineral fertilizer has been withheld from one of the NPK treatments in each trial. The residual effects are evaluated in relation to both control plots that have not been fertilized since before 1922 and plots that have received 100 kg N, 25 kg P and 120 kg K ha-1 yr-1. Cropping in these four years was 2nd-4th year timothy/meadow fescue ley followed by oats. No residual effects of the mineral fertilizer treatments were found. Previous use of manure, on the other hand, has given large residual effects, with only a slight decline over the four years. These responses in relation to the use of mineral fertilizer and the residual supply of N, P and K from manure, estimated from its uptake in crops, will be presented at the seminar.

Four populations of pollen beetle (Meligethes aeneus) was tested for susceptibility to lambda-cyhalotrin and tiacloprid in 2008. Resistance to pyrethroids was found in 2 populations from locations near Hamar, both in field tries and bioassays. One population from Vestfold has low resistance. The results was concistent with what was found in 2007. One population from Østfold had to high control mortality to draw any conclusion. These beetles were collected very late in the season. Low resistance was found in the same district in 2007. One population from Hamar had lower susceptibility to tiacloprid than the other populations.
