Microalgae

Microalgae are algae that you normally need a microscope to see. Microalgae are found in most environments where there is sufficient light and sufficient humidity; in the sea, in fresh water, in soil and in symbiosis with other organisms.

Microalgae contain many important nutrients, including high protein content, unsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

Microalgae can be cultivated on most areas in the sea or on land. There is no need to use land that could otherwise have been used in agriculture. By cultivating microalgae indoors during winter, a year-round microalgae production is also feasible.

At NIBIO, we work with various ways of utilizing microalgae, e.g., for feed and food, and for other commercial purposes such as pharmacy and other high-value products.
