Surveillance and diagnostics of harmful species

The Division of Biotechnology and Plant Health is commissioned by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food within plant health issues. We have several ongoing projects and activities related to biology and epidemiology of pests, surveillance and diagnostics and certified production vegetatively propagated crops.

Surveillance and diagnostics are central activities in the knowledge-based support to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority in their work for improved plant health.

Each year NIBIO is conducting several surveillance programs, among others:

  • Nematodes
  • Xylella fastidiosa
  • Fireblight
  • Bark beetles
  • Phytophthora

Diagnostics

Diagnostic services at NIBIO is channelled through the Plant Clinic, who organises analysis in the different available laboratories.

Certified production

Certified production schemes and the technologies within, have been developed for several crops. Critical factors for nuclear and certified stock propagation systems for vegetatively propagated crops are being identified. NIBIO plays a key role in the making virus-free plant material, maintenance of tissue culture, cryopreservation for Norwegion growers.
