Strengthening Tanzanian agriculture through sustainable soil management

On the 14th of February, NIBIO and the Tanzanian Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) signed an agreement in the presence of Tanzanian and Norwegian government officials at Klimahuset in Oslo, Norway. The new project ClimaSoilHealth aims to enhance Tanzania’s ability to manage soil health in a sustainable way, thus improving the livelihoods of the country’s many smallholders.

What motivates forest owners to engage in early harvesting?

Healthy forests that grow well provide the highest timber yield, and capture the most carbon, when allowed to reach maturity before the final harvest. Nevertheless, many Norwegian forest owners choose to harvest their forest at an earlier timepoint. Why? A new survey indicates that other factors, such as forest damage, changes in land use, and the fact that neighbours are conducting logging, are the primary motivations for an early harvest. Acute financial needs, or a desire to swap tree species, are rarely the reasons for early harvesting.

Fewer, but larger farms in Northern Norway

Over the last 20 years, there has been a significant decline in active farms in Northern Norway. Approximately half of them have been shut down. Nevertheless, production has remained relatively stable due to larger farms and increased yield per animal, but this could change.

Surprising discovery of pharmaceutical residues in Norwegian food waste

New research reveals that recycled food waste may be contaminated with pharmaceutical residues. The good news is that fungi cultivated in biogas digestate show minimal absorption of these contaminants. Addressing the future of Norway 's pink salmon

Recent projections indicate that pink salmon is likely to establish itself in many Norwegian rivers that are not yet occupied. Completely eradicating this non-native species from Norwegian rivers is highly unlikely. ”We need to find better ways to utilise this resource while at the same time protecting our native salmonids,” NIBIO-researcher says.

Technological research barn will provide new opportunities

Last week a new technological research barn for small ruminants was opened at NIBIO Tjøtta. The new facilities will make the research station, located at the coast of Northern Norway, leading in applied research, focusing on climate, feeding, behaviour, and precision livestock farming.
