Freshwater Ecosystems

Freshwater ecosystems, like rivers and lakes, have a fundamental ecological role and provide numerous biological and bio-economic services. These include the provision of habitat, fresh water, cultural and recreational value, and fish production to name a few.

However, anthropogenic impacts like pollution, hydroelectric dam building, and over-harvesting can harm the ecological balance of freshwater ecosystems. To increase our understanding of these threats to freshwater health, their impact on trophic levels as well as genetic diversity, we have started a freshwater monitoring program that includes isotope analyses, heavy metal analyses, and genetic and genomic analyses.
