Gigante Havbruk AS aims to access this market and to establish a commercial red algae farm. Therefore they requested our commercial partner Gifas to engage in development of knowledge/technology to facilitate this goal. Gigante Havbruk AS is the main shareholder of Gifas, and wants to invest 500,000 NOK in cash in this project. Goal of this project is to isolate and cultivate native red algae from Northern Norway and to test for their adequacy for commercial mariculture as a first step towards a sea based algae farm. Algae cultivars resulting from this project will be used in algae production projects in Northern Norway. It is necessary to isolate native strains, since they are adapted to unique Nordic light and climate conditions. To create a broad basis for future farming purposes, we ensure a significant genetic variability of strains by sampling plants throughout the seasons and at different water depths. We focus on species being of high value, perfectly suited for farming and comparably easy to isolate: Chondrus sp. , Gracilaria sp. and Porphyra spp. Selected strains will be screened for growth, biomass production and quality/quantity of commercial products. Isolation and screening is done by using high throughput techniques based on multi-well plates, and commercially relevant strains will be kept in a culture collection at Bioforsk Bodø.
