Summary

The project SOWAMO is a collaboration with Portuguese partners. It is coordinated by TARH – Earth, Environment and Water Resources and other partners are Monchique Municipality and the Centre for Marine Sciences of the University of the Algarve. The project is being carried out in the Monchique Mountain in Portugal in 2015 and 2016. Its goal is to demonstrate that the spring yields can be improved with the implementation of a simple Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) system. It intends to enhance the hydrogeological knowledge of the municipality, and provide its decision makers with a new and innovative MAR structure (infiltration channel) to locate upstream, within the influence area of some of Monchique’s horizontal wells. The winter hydric surplus will then be used for storage in the mountain aquifers, and will be available during times of scarcity.
